School of the Built Environment
The School of the Built Environment is part of the Faculty of Art, Design and the Built Environment and is based in the Jordanstown Campus, University of Ulster. It is an established centre of excellence in higher education for the built environment in the UK and on the island of Ireland. It has a clear focus on providing a professional education for a professional life.
The School of the Built Environment is located on the Jordanstown Campus, seven miles north of Belfast. It lies at the foot of the South Antrim hills and on the shore of Belfast Lough. There are excellent transport links into the city and to the other campuses at Coleraine, Belfast and Derry City.
The School has excellent links with the RICS and employers across Northern Ireland to ensure that its degrees are meeting the needs of modern economic, social and environmental agendas. The teaching programmes are research informed and practice led which provide an innovative standard of scholarship in the built environment. The School pays particular attention to providing site visits, case studies and residential field study. These opportunities are complemented by contributions from practitioners engaged across the built environment disciples.
The School benefits from investment in a range of learning facilities, including the provision of 100 networked computers and extensive laboratory facilities. The Learning Resource Centre offers further study and learning facilities via 400 networked computers and 250 personal study spaces arranged in different ways to meet the preferences of users. There is an on-line catalogue, 650,000 + books, access to 50,000 + e journals and a range of specialist electronic resources.
The School of the Built Environment supports students wishing to undertake placements as part of their degree. The School organises an annual Placement Fair which provides an innovative forum for employers and students. This is a popular event in the academic year with over 50 employers attending annually.
The School has an enviable track record of graduate employment in the broad surveying fields including quantity surveying, building surveying, construction and project management, property investment and development, housing and planning and development. It enjoys excellent relations with the professions and with employers in Northern Ireland and beyond. Graduates find employment opportunities in private practices, Government or quasi- Government departments or agencies, development companies, contracting organisations and property departments.
The University prides itself on the strength and diversity of research activities within the built environment disciplines. In the RAE 2008, the Built Environment Research Institute obtained the following profile with 15% of activities classified as four star (world leading research), 50% rated at three star (internationally excellent), 30% two star (international quality) and 5% at one star (research of national quality). Collectively, 95% of its activities were considered to be of international standing. BERI has made significant investment in new laboratory and infrastructure facilities which provide an excellent resource for undertaking both fundamental and applied research. A young dynamic staff base complemented by experienced researchers of international standing has enhanced the research capabilities in the Built Environment area. The Built Environment Research Institute (BERI) has currently over 50 academic staff including both core and associate members, supported by a strong base of full time contract researchers and over 70 PhD students. BERI provides a major research entity spanning across the Built Environment with expertise ranging from fire engineering research, hydrogen safety to sustainable technologies to property performance analysis.
