Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering
Geomatic Engineering at UCL has an outstanding reputation throughout the world for its education and research in spatial and environmental measurement, and information sciences. For over sixty years it has offered a range of postgraduate and undergraduate degree programmes. It carries out research in areas such as satellite positioning, geodesy, remote sensing, geographic information science and industrial metrology. We cover an exciting grouping of subjects in the spatial and environmental information sciences with a strong demand for graduates as well as challenging pure and applied research problems in a range of (largely interdisciplinary) fields.
The department offers undergraduate courses in Civil Engineering & Environmental Engineering with geomatics components. Our MSc courses are accredited by the RICS and cover a similar range of disciplines to our research in geomatics.
Employment opportunities: Graduates completing courses in the department benefit from the diverse range of employment opportunities that rely upon the acquisition or analysis of spatial data. These range from business geodemographics and health care provision, through environmental management, land and offshore surveying, and national mapping to retail location analysis and insurance risk management. Students on all our courses acquire some very marketable skills in areas such as numerical analysis, communication, and project management, which makes them very employable on graduation.
MSc and Diploma courses can be studied on either a full-time (one year) or part-time (two years) basis. Students on the postgraduate programmes have usually done first degrees in areas such as geography, mathematics, or engineering. Applications for funding can be made to the UCL Graduate School; other sources of funding may be available for specific courses.
