School of the Built Environment
The School of the Built Environment at LJMU is one of the leading providers of teaching, learning and industry focused research in the UK. Our core mission is to ensure our 1,350 undergraduate and 150 postgraduate students are fully equipped with the academic and professional skills required to meet the challenges and needs of today’s property profession.
Our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes encompass both core and specialist built environment disciplines and, developed in close partnership with industry and the professional bodies provide a curriculum that blends technical theory and knowledge with the practical and professional skills required for a challenging and dynamic career in the property sector.
The university’s innovative and unique WOW (World of Work) programme also offers our students the opportunity to maximise their employability profile, with key graduate and transferable skills embedded throughout all our courses.
Students in the School of the Built Environment are supported by a team of highly motivated staff who combine academic rigour with extensive practical experience of the construction and property professions. Visiting lecturers drawn from our industrial and professional partners contribute directly to the teaching programme, further enhancing the academic experience for our students.
The School is located within the LJMU City campus, adjoining one of the major gateways into Liverpool and only a few minutes walk from the lively city centre and our student accommodation . The extensive programme of modernisation and improvements within the campus offers students a contemporary learning environment with a suite of specialist laboratories as well as access to bespoke IT and design software used within the property and construction sectors.
Our research hub is located in the Henry Cotton building, home also to the BEST (Built Environment and Sustainable Technologies) Research Institute. With more than 40% of our research activity judged ‘world leading’ the Institute has established itself as a principal provider of industry focused applied and blue skies research.
At undergraduate level we offer RICS accredited honours programmes in Building Surveying, Quantity Surveying and Real Estate Management with flexible study route-ways including full-time, part-time and sandwich options.
Our RICS accredited postgraduate level courses include Commercial Building Surveying, Commercial Property Management, Commercial Property Development, Construction Project Management and Quantity Surveying & Commercial Management. These can be studied either full-time over the course of one year, or part-time over two years.
Other programmes such as the HNC/ HND in Building Production Technology, Building Surveying and Real Estate Management offers students a sound academic base from which to enter the profession as a surveying technician or progress on to an accredited undergraduate degree.
